I Think I Just Fell Off the Presbyopia Cliff!

Ok so I turned 40 in 2011, and we all know what that means: READING GLASSES. I was already a tad farsighted in my left eye, and after my high-astigmatism right-eye-only LASIK in 2007 I have not worn any glasses or contacts at all. But last night after a long day at work and a tire blowout on the commute, I was trying to read my iphone...and I couldn't! I was laughing b/c presbyopia has hit me, and I am now experiencing first hand what I talk to patients about literally on a daily basis. So here I go...thinking of trying monovision contacts, progressive glasses...the whole deal. I'll blog my personal experiences! Having some measurements taken today! 1st up: Ciba Dailies Aqua Comfort Plus in monovision!

  1. this is Dr. Prince. The following comment was made on this post, but I edited out the personal information: Hi doc. I've also heard of some people complaining of difficulty with iPhone reading also. Especially at nite. I have spent nearly 2 yrs day in and day out in front of a pc screen a hp vista flat panel from 2007. This includes the evening (I'm a writer and formerly an eBay junkie.)

I have noticed my text vision when watching television is poor and unnerving. Sometimes upon waking, I feel a burning and have redness in my eyes. I have broken vessels in both eyes while not large they're many. Also a colorless line on the white but closely nearing the pupil in one eye. I feel strong worry because I've learned now of uv rays from staring at pc and all of these frightening write ups about retinas etc. I plead for a response as what I should do to strength my eyes nutrition vitamin wise and what should I schedule in terms of eye check ups. I haven't seen an eye doctor in roughly a decade. Please help my with any advice you can spare. Sometimes I feel a pokey sensation such as a lash or hair strand in my eye without there being any.

  2. you really just need to visit an optometrist for all this stuff. if you're blurry, you could need glasses. if you're "burning", you could have dry eye or blepharitis. for the "lines" and redness in your eyes, there are literally dozens of possibilities. same with the "pokey sensation"...too much to try and address on a blog. just schedule an eye exam...

    good luck!

  3. Any updates on the Ciba Dailies Aqua Comfort Plus in monovision?...I need to get either bifocal glasses or contacts and am so hoping the contacts are improved from 2 years ago as that is when I last tried them...Also, tried the bifocal glasses and those were awful...I know we need to get 'use' to them but I didn't like having to keep my head int he same position (always) to read...so am very interested in any updates you may have. Sandy

  4. it's been going well! the lenses are comfortable for me all day and the monovision is fine. I don't do it all the time. some days I don't seem to need it (b/c I'm still an "emerging" presbyope). thanks for asking!

  5. You’re welcome and thank you for responding so quick. I finally made a visit to the eye doc today and she said I am not a candidate for the bifocals and/or monofocals(sp?) as my vision is too poor for either. I told her I’d like to then try getting contacts for my distance and will stick with the reading glasses for reading and pc work as it’s too difficult carrying around two pair of glasses. That being said I am a bit confused on my prescription for the contacts for which a trail pair had to be ordered. They are +plus rather then – minus/negative. I always thought for nearsightness (can’t see far) the prescription was always negative. Perhaps she misunderstood my intentions?

  6. well, it's doubtful that she misunderstood your intentions. more likely that she's somehow Rx'ing for your presbyopia. I guess you'll see (or not haha) when the trials arrive. good luck!

  7. How about trying this: http://www.i-see.org/gottlieb/presbyopia_chart.pdf

  8. No. That stuff doesn't work. No eye exercise can "delay" presbyopia. Myth & fringe medicine.

  9. How do you know it doesn't work? Has *that specific approach* ever been tested?

  10. EVERYTHING like this has been tried many, many, many times over. and none of it works. if there was some easy/fast/cheap way to eliminate presbyopia, I'm pretty sure the human race would have stumbled onto it by now. most of these techniques just "teach" blur interpretation and blur acceptance
